In my iMovie project, I made the video with the big idea of self or identity. It really is about my identity as an artist. Realistically, I put a lot of time and effort into my work, and it is not always fruitful. Therefore, I wanted to make a video about that frustration. In the video, these are all the things I do in my work - sketching, pouring paint, cutting up shapes, etc.
I set the video to this music, "All of Me" by Jon Schmidt, because I felt it kind of captured that feeling of the calm before the storm which happens when you encounter any difficulty. I actually know how to play this piano piece as well, and so it has a personal significance to me. On the music, Jon Schmidt wrote little notes about how this piece literally takes all of you to play - at one point you bang a range of notes with your entire arm, and so I felt that his comments also related to my idea in this video. For me, art takes everything out of me; it requires me to spend a lot of time in the studio, working through ideas, making work, and to have it take so much from me when sometimes it doesn't give back is intensely frustrating. I wish that every time I went to the studio something great would happen, but to be honest that is not the case, and I thought this video was a good way to document that.
My hope for the viewer is that maybe they can relate to that idea of working at something and still have nothing come of it. I feel like this is an idea that stretches easily beyond art - many people can identify with that problem. So while the video may seem very personal and specific to me as an artist, and maybe even driven by certain experiences, my hope is that people can still relate to the feeling I am creating in this piece.

Artist Statement
In my animated piece, I hoped to show a complex topic in a more simplistic manner, so that it might be easy for even children to understand. I made this video with the idea that it could be used as an example in my own classroom someday, so I tried to address a topic that a lot of people would be able to relate to. I chose the big idea of generosity because I think that everyone can learn from the generosity of others.
My goal with this video was mostly just to show that anyone could be generous, even when you think you have nothing to give. The protagonist in my video is sitting at a lemonade stand – an adventure that may not result in a lot of money – but still, through the generosity of others, is able to acquire a lot more than one would think you’d make selling lemonade. His dream is to buy an ipod with his money, and suddenly that dream becomes very real – it wouldn’t take as long as he thought! Yet, if the viewer had noticed, the mailbox remains full of notices and warnings – late bills. I hoped to make this small detail be one of the most important parts of the video. It becomes an essential part of the scene, because it is what causes the boy’s mother to feel defeated, resulting in him giving his mother the money.
I tried to make this storyline something that people can relate to no matter what their age or affluence. Using the familiarity of the setting and also the familiarity of having money problems can lead the viewer to relate to the piece, and possibly even picture themselves in it. Maybe some picture themselves as the truck driver who was so generous, or as the boy saving to buy his dream toy, or as the mother, so desperate in her situation. Any way, it is possible to relate to feeling I created if you can picture yourself in their places.
I hope that this sends a broader message to those who watch it, maybe a “pay it forward” kind of idea. I think emphasizing what could be done for others is a good reminder for anyone. This movie specifically for me highlights the joy of receiving, but also giving, and so I desire that those who watch it might also be compelled by those emotions.
I made my three
postcards from pictures I took of the pool where I am a lifeguard and swim
lessons instructor. As a swim teacher, I
deal with fear on a daily basis, from people of all ages, and so I thought I
might provide a little insight on how I view fear, and how it relates to the
imagination.
For the first postcard, we were required to cut and paste
objects into our image, so I used this method to describe how someone’s
imagination might embellish a place like the pool, in a positive light. People who are excited by the pool
environment may imagine there to be fish in the pool, or that the teachers are
mermaids. I used this technique to
repeat the fish and dolphins throughout the image, adding a background of
foliage to further show how someone’s imagination may enhance the
environment. This card therefore is
about the absence of fear, and how the imagination can freely work to create a
different world out of a simple place.
For the second postcard, we were required to transform
our image in a way that showed a place different from reality. I chose to use this technique to show the
pool in the presence of fear. I am
really interested in the fact that fear can transform any place into an image
that will look similar, no matter where the place is. All fearful places generally have an element
of darkness, and so I think that fear limits your imagination – when you
imagine a fearful place, the things you imagine are often not very specific to
that place.
For the third postcard, we were required to use text in
our image to reveal a personal insight about our place. I chose to place my text on the diving board,
since this is one of the most feared things about the pool – even those who
swim well can fear it. While the diving
board has many different possibilities for imagination – some see it as a
runway, others see it as a pirate’s plank – I did not want to project my own
imaginings on the image, so instead I placed emphasis on the diving board
itself, as well as the text. I blurred
out the background and applied a tint so that the diving board would stand out
more, allowing the viewer to create their own imaginations freely. I chose the text, “Fear is your imagination.
Free it.” because thinking about fear as something that is imagined can help
you get over it. Seeing a place as
something you fear instead of seeing it as just a place causes you to imagine
differently. Saying that fear is
constructed by our imaginings about that place makes it easier to change those
imaginings. I also thought that so tell
the viewer to “free it” was a good way to connect fear to imagination even
further – by freeing your fear, you free your imagination, and vice versa.

I thought the last two postcards expressed your big idea the best. The second one especially created a sense of fear with the unrecognizable figures and blurry dark background. Did you put the cones on the third one or were they already there? The cones are pretty interesting to think about with the topic of fear.
ReplyDeleteYour abilities with photoshop are really great! Although the scenes are obviously surreal, the photos make it seem almost real.
Big idea is fear and it's relation to imagination.
ReplyDeleteI like that you chose to represent a "no fear" image for your first postcard. IT is interesting to look at your big idea from the perspective of its absence. The transition in the next two card from fear to freeing fear is a nice progression.
Your third postcard could have been easier to understand with a slightly more legible font.
Big Idea:
ReplyDeleteThese postcards appear to be about the fear of water that is caused by an overactive imagination.
Artmaking Strategies:
Gayle utilized repetition, transformation, and text to demonstrate the role of one's imagination. The result of this imagination sometime results in fear. In the first card, she repeated water creatures in a pool. In the second one, she transformed the background behind the pool to create a new context for the pool. In the third card, she used text on the diving board to demonstrate the fear that occurs in or near the pool.
Evaluation:
I think most of Gayle's cards are successful. The most successful one is the second one. I really get the sense of imagination and fear from the pool scene. The gloomy lighting and strange creatures looming in the background really set the tone and anxiety.
The least successful card is the first one. I understand her approach to demonstrate the imagination occurring at the pool, but I do not get any sense of fear from postcard one. Something should be changed to postcard one to include this sense of fear; maybe by replacing the dolphins and fish with intimidating sea creatures. Gayle discussed how this card is actually the absence of fear, but I am not sure I would have gathered that without her discussion on the piece.
A similar change could be done to the third card. The idea of fear is present due to the text, but the image itself does not demonstrate the fear as I would expect.
I think that your big idea is pretty well represented in your postcards, the only one I stumbled over a little bit was the first one. However, once I read the statement and heard you talk about it, it made more sense once it was the absence of fear.
ReplyDeleteYour technological proficiency is really nice! Everything is seamed together really well, nothing looks literally copy and pasted. I really enjoy the second postcard especially...creeepy.
Really the only critique I have is possibly the addition of shadows/reflections of the animals with the first postcard, to make them seem a little more part of the environment.
Hi, Gale. How are you? As a conceptual set I think they all work together, but not in the way they are presented. The first postcard works best as the last image of the three, sadly, though, that was the requirement of the piece.
ReplyDeleteEach is very well handled technically. The first one can have a bit of work on size variation, specifically the fish on the left being too large, but the dolphins are handled really well.
I personally love the atmosphere on the third one, as I had moments as a child being filled with dread on the diving board and being completely free of that dread the second I jumped into the water. The focus on the diving board and the haziness of the pool capture that feeling very well. Very nice!
1. How fear relates to imagination.
ReplyDelete2. Uses the absence of fear to free the imagination.
3. Your second postcard is by far the strongest of the three. The first one does not read "fear" to me. It reads happy-fun-land. Most of us will picture fear as a darkness or swarm of evil. The absence of fear is known to most of us as regular life, or at least parts of our regular life. In relating the absence of fear we first have something to fear, which makes the second postcard your strongest.
the big idea/ key concepts of these pieces is fear and imagination. it is showing that fear is part of your imagination and if you get over your fears then you free your imagination
ReplyDeleteyou used the darkness aspect of the second post card very well to show fear. also the technical aspect of replacing the wall of the pool with the outdoors the first postcard was done very well.
i think you used photoshop very well to get your point of fear and imagination across. one suggestion i have is to maybe blend in the words in the third post card a little more to make it more subtle.
I think that you have really portrayed the idea of being afraid and trying to free yourself with your explanation. Being freed of your fears is a very important task in everyday life and we all need to encounter our fears.
ReplyDeleteI really like that you placed the pool outside to try to free the ideas about being afraid of swimming.
Using the imagination to create and expand your ideas really helped. You did a great job of creating a fictional space to convey the idea. I think that your explanation helped to understand it. If I had not heard or read the explanation, I don't think I would've understood the concept of freeing fear, but I think with the explanation, it is sufficient enough information in the statement to allow understanding.
I think that your idea of fear as one's imagination allows for many options in he art-making process. I believe you executed this idea well, and I can see that they are all relating in concept as well as aesthetic ideas. Your end results are successful and clear. Once you discussed your idea, the images became more clear to me in what you wanted and what you were aiming for.
ReplyDeleteThe first post card is nicely cut and pasted with extra images and allows the viewer to participate in an imaginary, fantastical experience. The second is well done, the colors work well with the idea. This is the piece I appreciate the most of the trio. The third postcard portrays text that is relevant and deep in meaning. I enjoy the idea you worked with, and thing you have many possibilities to expand on it for other projects.
I don't think your first postcard works every well with your focus of fear. However, your other two really work well with your big idea of fear. I think your choice of sky is really helpful for relaying fear. I lived in Wisconsin for awhile and if you see a sky like that you usually turn on your TV and get ready to head to the basement. I think you did a great job manipulating Photoshop to convey your message of fear.
ReplyDeleteHey Gayle! Id have to say my favorite postcard of the three was the second one because i felt it best conceptually represented your idea and technically it was very interestng and actually gave me a sense of fear in that place, even though Im not scared of pools.
ReplyDeleteThe text on the third postcard is very thought provoking relating to all situations in life, not just the pool, and is illustrated well in this place.
I really like the idea of letting your imagination overcome your fear. I just think a little more technicality could have helped this image be a little more convincing, but as a fellow newbie at photoshop myself, job well done!!
i think that your idea of art was incorporated in your i movie pretty well. i really liked the music choice and the fact you can play it makes it more conceptually meaningful. i liked that you showed the process and didnt just shoe you painting that was interesting.
ReplyDeleteI loved all the different shots of you iMovie! Knowing you, I can easily understand how the video represents you and what you go through as an artist. You kept the movie interesting through the fast-paced and varied angles. The music was also upbeat and intense. The passion in the piano playing definitely portrayed your emotions behind painting. If the movie had to be longer, it would have been nice to watch the whole process where you would end with a finished painting. Overall I thought it was great and well thought through! :)
ReplyDeleteiMovie Project
ReplyDeleteVideo is well shot, and uses interesting camera angles, especially in the beginning. The paint stuff is visually interesting and cool.
The music really moves this piece along, which is good. I do sorta wish it had culminated into you making some sort of mark on canvas, wall, something. We get this build up and we are expecting a catharsis that seems to never come.
HI AGAIN GAYLE!!!
ReplyDeleteyour iMovie was nice, there was some really good editing that I thought matched the tone of the music at different times too. LIke when the music was slow, the video was slow. Then the music picked up and the video sped up too.
My favorite part was the end, throwing the paper at the camera.
The only negative criticism I have is that sometimes the video got a little pixely or blurry. So maybe next time just reshoot something that turns out unfocused (unless you want it to be unfocused)
GAYLE!!!! I loved your movie! I was able to understand the intention of the movie even without your statement. Even better, though, was how you explained the intention of the music. Knowing more about the song was a good addition to the already good video.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your use of various perspectives. I am not sure if this was your intention, but having the camera placed so low and looking up at you really added to the tension and the sense of "feeling low" that it seems you wanted us to have.
GREAT!!!!
Your movie and lesson were both interesting. I like that the project you chose is a semester long assignment. The movie was interesting and you did a good j ob with the technology
ReplyDeleteI really say your big idea and concept show through in this short film. I think the feeling and emotion was portrayed well especially through the music matching the tone and visual elements of the movie. Sometimes the picture was a little pixely but it didn't bother me much. The feeling overtook the whole video for me. Your concept was very relatable. I think it is very successful!
ReplyDeleteGayle, your video turned out well and the music worked out really well with it. This really tells a lot about yourself and your process which is important to you. I like how you sped up the video at parts so we can see more of it. It seemed as if it were a movie that would be shown on Art21 to quickly express the artist. It went smoothly and didn't seem very choppy to me. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of this video portraying the identity of an artist. I also like that the music has significane to you but I can help but think its a liitle humerous with the movies scenes, which Im not sure was your intention. Nice Work!
ReplyDeleteI love the struggle of the artist and this is a fine display of that. The camera angles and fast editing are well handled and show that you understood the software we were given to use. The only problem I have with it is that it is just a collection of events. Things happen and then nothing. That is the struggle of the artist, yes, but personally I like to see the work culminating into a "back to the drawing board" moment. You have that, but the whole movie feels like that one moment with little build up. But this is just me saying this.
ReplyDeleteYour video was very nice. I wish I saw the final painting that you were working on. It didn't really feel like it had an ending. However, throwing the paper at the camera was a nice touch. I think your music choice was the perfect for the type of emotion you wanted to convey.
ReplyDeleteGayle! Did you know you can also spell your name Gail, or Gael, or Trevor. Pretty interesting huh! Words are so super functional, without them we would be so lost. Think about it, I could make up a language right now outnk lasoto ttoak vonsto yootoooal reqeuoot and you wouldn't know what I said at all! BUT I DO!!
ReplyDeleteRough translation : Top Gun is full of volleyball, Airplanes, and Tom Cruises buttocks. Oh, and some Russians die, but they deserved it. I mean building a wall to keep the west out, which incidentally had been invading them for centuries (or trying to), how awful of them.
